Identity, Conflict, and Counter-Narratives: Dalit Experiences in Culture, Politics, and Stigmatisation was launched at India International Centre on 24 April 2025. Pictured here are the panellists for the event: (L–R) Professor Yagati Chinna Rao, co-editor of the book; Dr Brahma Prakash, Assistant Professor, School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU; Professor Surinder S. Jodhka, School of Social Sciences, JNU; Dr Harish S. Wankhede, Assistant Professor, School of Social Sciences, JNU; Professor Raj Sekhar Basu, co-editor of the volume.
The volume editors in conversation with guests before the event.
Professor Basu spoke about the process of bringing the book together. He also discussed the importance of looking at a wider range of historical experiences, and particularly the experiences of Dalit communities across south India, as has been done in the volume.
Dr Prakash brought insights from the realm of performance studies to the discussion and emphasised the emergence of new modes of Dalit identity formation.
Dr Wankhede emphasised the agency of marginalised communities in writing and interpreting their own histories.
Professor Jodhka, the moderator for the panel, brought together the various threads of discussion and spoke about disciplinary biases and gaps in academic understandings of caste.
Professor Rao brought the discussion to a close by reflecting on the struggle to prioritise issues of caste in Indian history-writing.
