In our daily lives, we all use a wide variety of resources for different purposes. We are also acutely aware that the resources available to us are limited in supply. In recent times, there has been a significant shift in the way resources are viewed, understood and used. Rising populations across the globe are further impacting the availability of resources. Any misuse of resources, by an individual, or family, or community, or nation impacts everyone on Earth. Efficient management of limited resources is crucial with respect to sustaining human well-being, health, happiness and the environment.

Sustainable development is possible only through the effective and efficient management of resources. This includes the management of environmental resources in a prudent manner, making effective use of indigenous methods and technology.
