This book is intended to be used as a textbook for a first course in fluid mechanics. It stresses on principles and takes the students through the various developments in theory and applications. A number of exercises are given at the end of each chapter, all of which have been successfully class-tested by the authors. It will be ideally suited for students taking an undergraduate degree in engineering in all universities in India.

Some significant additions have been made to the text in the present edition. The new topics discussed include propagation of errors, the force on a fireman’s nozzle, the propulsion of turbojets and rockets, standing wave flume for measurement of discharge in irrigation channels and the characteristics of centrifugal pumps. A number of examples applying the concept of control volume and pressure momentum transport rate equation have been added

Considering the importance of compressible flow, a whole chapter on elements of compressible flow has been added.

Dr N Narayana Pillai obtained his Ph D in Civil Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1965 and served as a lecturer in the same institute. He did Post Doctoral work at the University of Waterloo, Canada and later at the University of Connecticut, USA, where he worked as a faculty. He served as a professor in Civil Engineering at REC Kurukshetra and later as the Principal. He was the recipient of the outstanding Corporate Fellow Member Award from the Institution of Engineers (India) in 1998. He has about 30 years of teaching experience, guided 6 Ph D theses and has a number of publications to his credit. He was the Director of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore and is now Professor Emeritus at this University.
