Textbook of Elements of Mechanical Engineering encapsulates the basic concepts of varied fields of mechanical engineering, particularly fuel and steam energy, the role of prime movers in power generation (steam boilers, steam turbines, gas turbines, water turbines and IC engines) and the theory behind refrigeration and air-conditioning. It also introduces the reader to the use of machine tools in manufacturing processes, the fundamentals of engineering materials, robotics and automation. The book builds on these topics from the first principles, amply supported by examples, solved problems and illustrations. This book caters to the revised syllabus enunciated by VTU for its first-year BE/BTech programme in all branches of engineering and has been prescribed by the university as a recommended book from the academic year 2014–2015.
S Trymbaka Murthy is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Sir M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, Bengaluru.
