The Book
Madhyakaleen Bharat is the Hindi edition of the book, History of Medieval India. This book covers the period between the eighth and the seventeenth century. Generally, most books on the history of medieval India start around AD 1206, the period of the Turkish invasion and establishment of Turkish rule in parts of north India. Madhyakaleen Bharat breaks this traditional pattern by starting at a much earlier date, from the eighth century onwards. The 400 years from the eighth to the twelfth century, although a very significant period in Indian history, is a less studied period.
The significance of this period lies in the fact that ancient Indian society was slowly changing and taking a new shape - marked by profound changes in polity, economy, society and culture. Very few books that survey medieval Indian society explore this period. The late Professor Satish Chandra has both investigated this period and ensured that the information is comprehensible to students and the general reader.
This textbook is presented in a lucid manner, moving away from stereotyped analyses. The book focuses on:
- The histories of the Chola, Bahmani and Vijayanagara kingdoms.
- The influence exerted by the Surs, Lodis, the Delhi Sultanate, and the Mughals.
- The importance of the Rajput kings and the Marathas.
- Religious movements, such as Sufism and the Bhakti movement.
- The changing political, economic and agrarian scene.
