Here is a substantial work which reviews India’s nearly half a century of international cricket, and places our test cricketers and their deeds in a historical perspective. Abandoning the traditional approach of other reviewers, each chapter is devoted to a particular specialisation of cricket. The author evaluates specialists through comparison and analysis, supported by statistics, and also records whatever lines of succession they began on, or continued, making the book the first of its kind on Indian cricket.

Besides playing in the Rohinton Baria tournament for Patna University and in the Ranji Trophy for Bihar State, Sujit Mukherjee (1930–2003) was a test cricket commentator on radio and television. He wrote two other cricket books—The Romance of Indian Cricket (1968) and Between Indian Wickets (1977). A collection of his essays, An Indian Cricket Century (2002) was edited by the award-winning cricket historian, Ramachandra Guha.

A former university teacher, Dr Mukherjee joined Orient Longman (now Orient BlackSwan) as Chief Publisher in 1970 and was later a director on the board of the company. A literary critic, Dr Mukherjee translated poetry, fiction and criticism from Bangla into English. He was known as much for his prolific and elegant writing as for his wry wit.
